 Where It Started
After WW II, with disappearing big bands, and the arrival of the Juke Box, we started dancing to records stored in the juke box. That was the focal point for our dancing. When the portable record players came into being, with it's stack of records, it became the focal point for our dances. And now a virtual band.

h animated lights tuned to the beat. The reflecting mirror ball is an added treat. Volume is controlled to allow communication between aThe Cascades Virtual Band CVB combines the two focal points. It looks like a band and plays hours of recorded music. In the case of the CVB the music played is a collection of all the requests made at previous dances. Basically 40's to 90's and few line dances. It is a focal point witttendees not seated near the band.

The CVB plays music in sets. A set starts with a slow mushy number, a faster number, and a faster yet number like swing, a Latin number, rock numbers, and finally a line dance. The line dance is announced to give the participants time to assemble. Then on to the next set. All the selections are drawn from the list of requests from all our previous dances.

Emails and personal comments have shown this to be something for everyone. Requests are always accepted and played from a 15 hour file of popular music consisting of 303 popular dance songs or 1,570 songs from a Juke-Box selection file. What is the difference between the CVB and the usual DJ?

First let's list the different types of DJ's
1. The DJ's I see in todays nightclubs play songs from vinyl or a computer file. If there are vocals they are part of the vinyl or computer file.
2. The live on stage DJ's are usually two people, a singer and accompaniment, playing instrumental music from a computer file and singing along.
3. The live on stage single DJ, may sing while playing a computer instrumental file.

The CVB
1. Is close to type 1. above. The band plays recorded music, some have vocals.
2. The selections are played in a strict sequence so that there is something for everyone.
3. The faux band is a focal point with lights flashing in time with the music and a mirror ball for effect.
4. The sound is controlled so that verbal communication is possible away from the band.
5. This is one of the ways Maria and I give back to the community. There is no charge for our service.
